What Is the Average Age of Menopause in India and Worldwide?
Maybe it came up at a family wedding. Your cousin, three years younger than you, mentioned between the sangeet and the dinner that her periods had stopped. You did the maths on the drive home. Or maybe you read online that menopause happens "around 51" and wondered why your body seems to be knocking on that door at 44.
Here is what the numbers actually say, and what they don't.
In short: Most women reach menopause between 45 and 55. The average age is about 51 in the UK and US, but studies in India often report an earlier average age of menopause, around 46 to 47. Menopause means 12 months in a row without a period, and the perimenopause transition before it lasts about 4 years on average.
What age does menopause start?
It helps to separate two things. Menopause itself is a single point: the moment you have gone 12 months in a row without a period. You only know you have reached it by looking back.
The changes start earlier, in perimenopause. That stretch lasts about 4 years on average, though it can be a few months or up to 10 years. So when women ask "what age does menopause start?", they often mean "when will I start to notice things?" For many women, that is somewhere in their 40s.
According to the NHS, most women reach menopause between 45 and 55, and the average in the UK is about 51. The average in the US is similar. If you are wondering what the early changes feel like, here are 12 perimenopause signs at 40.
What is the average age of menopause in India?
Studies in India often report an earlier average, around 46 to 47. That is several years earlier than the UK and US figure. The reasons are not fully understood, and averages vary between studies and regions.
Put that together with perimenopause lasting about 4 years on average, and it makes sense that many Indian women notice the first changes in their early 40s.
This matters more than it seems. A lot of health information is written with the UK or US average in mind. So if you are in India, or South Asian and living abroad, you may be told you are "too young" for menopause symptoms at 43. You are not imagining it, and it is okay to say so. If you live far from home, this post is for you: menopause for South Asian women abroad.
Is an average age a deadline?
No. An average is only the middle of a wide range. Reaching menopause anywhere between 45 and 55 is common, and plenty of women fall either side of the middle.
Not "Am I early or late?" This instead: "What is my body telling me, and who can I talk to about it?"
If you can, ask your mother or older sisters when their periods stopped. Your doctor may find it useful to know. For many families this was never discussed, and that silence is not your fault. Here is a gentle way to begin: your mother never talked about menopause.
हर औरत का अपना समय होता है। Every woman has her own timing, and yours is not wrong.
What counts as early menopause?
Menopause before 45 is called early menopause. Before 40, it is called premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), which affects about 1 in 100 women. If your periods have stopped, or become very irregular, before 45, see a doctor. It is not something to wait out. Read more about early menopause before 45.
You are far from alone
An estimated 1.2 billion women worldwide will be menopausal or postmenopausal by 2030. That is a huge number of women walking the same road, in every city and village, at every kitchen table. Most of them were never given the facts either.
It is okay to feel unsettled by the numbers. It is okay to feel relieved by them too. Both reactions make sense.
Try this now: a 5-minute steadying breath
Worrying about timing is exhausting. This practice is for the moments when your mind starts running ahead: in a parked car, on a bench, or sitting on the edge of the bed before anyone else is up.
- Sit where you won't be interrupted for 5 minutes and place both feet flat on the floor.
- Feel the ground under your feet and let your hands rest in your lap.
- Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4, then out slowly for a count of 6. Repeat ten times.
- On each out-breath, let one worry go: too early, too late, not ready.
- End with a hand on your heart and one sentence: "My body is on its own timeline, and that is okay."
You can't do this wrong. If your thoughts wander, notice it kindly and return to your feet on the floor.

The guided practice above, It Is Not Too Late, is for the days when you feel your body has moved on without you.
When should you see a doctor?
See a doctor if your periods stop before 45, if you have very heavy bleeding or bleeding between periods, or if symptoms are affecting your sleep, mood or daily life. Any bleeding after menopause, even light spotting, needs to be checked. Get urgent care for chest pain, fainting or breathlessness. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, contact your local emergency services or a crisis helpline now.
